As most of you know, I am a planner. I like to know what to expect and kind of freak out a little if I don't. I am only comfortable if I am prepared for every possible contingency. (When I travel, it is ridiculous...I always take at least 3 pairs of shoes and several jackets of varying levels of warmth. You just never know what you will need!) Right now, a major part of my future has been decided. I am moving to New York. However, that is still four and a half months away. There is not a whole lot I can do yet. And it's kind of driving me nuts. I want to know everything now! Where will I live? What classes will I take? What research will I be working on? Who will I be TA-ing for? What is the church singles branch like? Should I go there or to a family ward? Where will I buy groceries? Where should I do my banking? There are a million questions like that in my head. I know that as time goes by that I will figure all this stuff out, but the control freak that lurks inside of me wants all of this resolved immediately!
All of this is simply to say that I have resolved to do a better job at living in the moment. As excited as I am for this move, I will really miss my home here. I don't want to miss any of my time left here because I am stressing about the future. One of the philosophies that I so much enjoy in yoga is the idea (called kshama) that we only truly live when we are present and mindful of what's going on in the now. I am getting good at doing that during my practice, but now it is time to take it to the real world. So, the plan is to enjoy being where I am at this moment. It is super hard for me to let go like that (control-freak-me is screaming in protest even as I am typing this), but I trust that in due course everything will be ok...no, better than ok, it will be great!

As someone who lived in upstate NY for 3ish years. Here is my advice:
Layers. It is going to be unbelievably cold in the long winter. It builds character haha. But you will love it. Also, get a "hardcore" heavy duty snow/ice scraper. The ones that most people have in the rest of the country won't cut it in NY.
Always keep at least a 1/4 of a tank of gas in your car in the winter. Trust me. People get stuck for hours.
Lake Effect snow. It hits without warning and that's the kind that is usually worse than when they do predict Lake Effect.
In football, even if you don't care, root for the Giants, not the Jets. Jets fans are mean. Giants fans are awesome. And the Bills just aren't that good usually.
And everyone loves lacrosse there. FYI-the Powell brothers are superstar national lacrosse players from Carthage, NY. That's all you'll really need to know.
Take pictures in the fall. Falls in NY are amazing.
Go to the Palmyra pageant every year.
Really enjoy the spring/summer there. They aren't very long.
hahaha You'll love it :)
Thanks Kel! Great advice :)
