Thanksgiving was a little different for me this year. It didn't make sense for me to go home; it's far, it's expensive, and it would have only been for a few days. This was the first major holiday that I have spent away from my family.
My family has some awesome Thanksgiving traditions. Mormons are notorious for their weird food...and my fam totally embraces that heritage. Sour cream and raisin pie...jello with stuff in it...peanut turkey...enough said. We also have some pretty awesome things... funeral potatoes are a particular favorite of mine (they are potatoes cooked with cheese and cream; they are so so yummy!) Then after dinner, we pull out the christmas music. My mom usually plays and my aunts and cousins and I stand around the piano and sing. We don't mess around either. We are talking four part harmonies, and legit choral arrangements of traditional and not-so-traditional carols. (Remember, there are 8 sisters plus the cousins. It's a little like the von Trapps.)
Thankfully (pun intended) I got to spend the day with some people who might as well be my family. Allegra and I became friends when I lived in PA during high school. We bonded over musicals and show choir and singing. She is awesome, and I adore her. Her family was super nice and invited me down to their home for the weekend. I had so much fun! My family, because it is so big, handles Thanksgiving assembly line style- paper plates, long buffet style tables, self serving, industrial sized everything. It was a new experience for me to actually have everyone sitting at one table with fancy plates and silverware, with the food in the same place.
I am also grateful for all the other offers that I got from people to join them. My branch president and his wife, my friend from my cohort, the Hannigs, and a friend from church all invited me to spend
Thanksgiving with them. People are so nice.
Being so far away from home is not easy. But I am grateful for the experiences that I am having and everything that I am learning.
